We are the first office in Spokane to utilize digital radiography that is seamlessly integrated into paperless patient charting and an intra-oral photography. These provide our team and patients with diagnostically superior radiographic and visual representations of conditions in the mouth.
Digital radiography is the method of capturing x-ray images that have been broken down into electronic pieces (pixels). They are then stored on a computer or viewed on a monitor. Digital images are dynamic: they can be easily measured, enhanced, enlarged, and examined simultaneously from multiple locations.
This is how it works: A sensor is placed in the mouth that digitally identifies x-rays that have been beamed from a machine. A small cable from the sensor leads to the system's image capturing electronics. Within seconds, the image appears on a video monitor. Software may then be used to interpret and store the image.
Advantages of Digital Radiography
- Less radiation. Digital radiography requires about 85% less x-ray radiation than a conventional film to expose the sensor.
- Magnification. The diagnostic power of digital radiography is phenomenal. The image created can be projected onto a large monitor, rather than processed onto a 2 inch conventional film.
- Enhancement. Images may be enhanced in a variety of ways to increase their diagnostic power.
- Speed. Images can be displayed in seconds, rather than in 5 to 10 minutes.
- Clarity. The computer can differentiate between 256 shades of grey, compared to 16-25 shades on a conventional film.
- Patient Education. Patients see and understand the conditions in their mouths much more clearly when x-ray images are displayed on the monitor.
- Patient Co-diagnosis. Patients are able to participate in the diagnosis of their own oral health care needs when they are given the tools to interpret the data that have been utilized in their examination.
- Versatility. Images can be sent via email to referring or consulting dentists, or to insurance companies to document and validate the necessity of proposed treatment.
- Convenience. Data relating to specific oral conditions may be digitally catalogued for convenient retrieval and correlation at any time.
- Environmentally Friendly. Digital radiography is environmentally friendly. Processing chemicals and lead waste have been eliminated.
